Movie Review:

Arun Vaidyanathan is a US-based software professional-turned filmmaker who learnt filmmaking at the New York Film Academy.

He has made eight short films so far and most of them have won international awards. As you wish won accolades at the Lower East side film festival in New York while Br(a)illiant won the 'Exile Award' at the London Vimbam Film Festival.

He was also selected as Mania TV's 'Featured Film Maker' twice and his short film Stinking cigar was selected as the 'Featured Film.'

Now, the talented filmmaker is ready with his first feature film Achamundu! Achamundu!. Though the film is in Tamil, it is made in the US with the technical crew from Hollywood. The film is said to be the first Indian film to have used the Red Camera.

Other than Prasanna and Sneha, John Shea, an Emmy-award winning artist also plays a major role in the film.

The filmmaker spoke to Shobha Warrier when he was in Chennai for the post production work of Achamundu! Achamundu!.

Movie Review:

The debutant director Sakthivel and producers AGS Entertainment’s have dished out a clean, sweet, simple love story. It has enough charm to yield a fun matinee for 2 hours and 15 minutes.

But that’s it, as the film has nothing new in it story wise or in treatment. The first half is fun and frolic plus three songs, two of them dream songs in foreign locales. Post interval it takes a different route and becomes an action masala set in Kollywood’s wild west- South Tamil Nadu mainly Nagercovil.

Nakulan, one of the five boys in director Shankar's 'Boys', has grown in stature to establish himself as one of the important heroes in Tamil film industry. After a good showing in 'Kadhalil Vizhunthen' and 'Masilamani', the young actor is now ready with 'Kandha Kottai', a film by debutantdirector Sakthivel.

Taj Deccan, Hyderabad was the place were the movie launch of Saleem – "Dummu reputadu" was held this morning, 1st of September.

'Sri Lakshmi Prasanna Pictures' are the producers of 'Saleem' which is a home production of Mohan Babu. The production house is in for a double delight as this is the 50th movie produced under their banner with Mohan Babu's son enacting the lead role.

The male lead is played by Vishnu who is awaiting matrimony and Ileana as the female lead. The movie is directed by YVS Chowdary who has high hopes on this movie. The music is being composed by Sandeep Chowta.

The inauguration of the movie took place as Dasari Narayana Rao striked the clapboard for the shooting to commence. The camera was rolled on by Nagarjuna Akkineni and the scene was directed by K.Raghavendra Rao. The script was handed over by Mr & Mrs Mohan Babu to perform the pooja. The harathi was performed by Prabhas after Kalyanram Nandamuri lighted the lamps.

Movie Review:

The sparkling stunts, the fiery punch lines, the signature lighter moments and some foot tapping numbers, everything that makes a Vijay film worth your time in theaters are there in his latest offering Vettaikaran. But then, every film of Ilaya Thalapathi has all these things, you might ask. Yes, but it is the execution that makes each one different from the other and the question as you enter theaters to watch this movie is whether newcomer Babu Sivan has managed to pull the formulaic one man army theme out of the rut that it has recently fallen into.

The storyline is very familiar to anyone who follows Vijay movies. A small town do-gooder (Vijay) idolizes an honest super cop of his town. The cop is merciless against all evil forces, an encounter specialist who doesn’t believe in arrests and judicial procedures; he just guns down the perpetrators. The small town do-gooder wants to emulate this cop. But, the only problem facing him is that to become an IPS officer, one must first pass out of school and then get a graduate degree. His failure at academics is an irritant to his father, quite understandably. Keeping his eventual dream in mind, he somehow gets over the hurdle and heads to the big metropolis (Chennai) to seek his graduation and the IPS dream.

Chennai, expectedly, greets to him a) good college education b)part time employment and c)a heinous goon whose crime rate is like no one that he has seen before. The rest is all about the mission to eradicate evil. How does he do it? Does he become an IPS officer and bring them to law or does he become a force on his own, hunting them down like the title of the movie suggests? Find out in theaters. And yes, there is a love story in the midst of all this which you are bound to notice because of the songs.

When the director is James Camaron, expectations must be soaring. This extremely brilliant director gave us a fantastic movie, perhaps one of his best shots, Titanic in the year 1997. It got tremendous success. After watching his Movie Avatar, it can be said that he has been able to maintain his standard. The titanic was based on a love story. The ship was used as a medium and the catastrophe as the catalyst to the story. Here the subject is being treated completely in different way.

Sam Worthington is playing the main character here. The name of his character is Jake Sully. The whole story centers round this character. Jake, who is an ex- mariner, was paralyzed from the waist in a battle. He, therefore, decided to participate in the Avatar show to get back his normal and healthy body. Thus he was ready to journey to Pandora, a dense forest enriched with several terrifying elements. In this very place, Na’vi, a particular human race lives. Their look and behavior is quite monkey like, but their brain is much more developed than a human being. They are harmless and love to live unified in their own world. When some people try to intrude their land in search of some rare kind of minerals, they become impatient and aggressive.

Here comes the actual story. Jake, who is completely innocent about the minerals and everything, becomes a part of the infringement. Avatars take many policies and steps to win over the Na’vis. Audiences here can see some excellent movie and sound effects which are just awesome. James has successfully blended a love story in this adventurous thriller. Jake falls in love with a beautiful, young Na’vi girl. What will happen then? Let it not unfold here, otherwise you will lose interest to watch this film.

It can be said that it is a must watch movie. The cinematography, sound effects, editing special effects; all are just excellent. The director has shown innovation in creating the Nav’s. These blue complexioned, monkey types elements are excellently featured in this film. Sam Worthington is wonderful. This thirty three years old Australian movie star has done a brilliant job. He makes his character convincing to the audiences. Other artists have also justified their characters. The movie is going to be released worldwide on the 18th December, 2009. It is hoped that it would be one of the most block bluster Hollywood movies.

Movie Review:

The story goes like this: Sakthi is a happy-go-lucky guy, but his father Sethupathi, a clerk, has great dreams that his son should become a successful engineer. Realizing Sakthi’s inability to be outstanding in studies due to his limited brainpower, his father stops compelling him to become an engineer; rather, he inspires him to choose any vocation he can shine in! Sakthi’s peaceful family life suddenly vanishes when his parents are brutally murdered (in front of him and an apathetic public) by Kathir, prime accused of a murder case in which Sakthi’s father was a key eyewitness. Broken up by the painful and tragic loss of his loving parents, Sakthi decides to take revenge, but in vain. He is caught in his murder attempt due to his inexperience and remanded for 14 days

Due to his shy nature, Sakthi has to undergo severe harassments from the jail guards, where he meets four young, inborn criminals including lame Dabba and fat guy Pandu. He becomes friendly with them only to avoid torment from the jailers. Sakthi has no plans to join the group, but at the same time, is greatly attracted by their love and concerns. The four guys plan to escape from jail; at the last moment, they forcibly take Sakthi to the world of freedom and gradually introduce him to a criminal life.

In flashback, the guys come to know about Sakthi’s past and decide to kill Kathir. After executing Kathir, the five friends take a train to Mumbai to avoid the police special force, but fate leads them to a local don in Renigunta (near Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh). In Renigunta, Sakthi meets a dumb girl and love slowly blossoms between them. In fact, the girl’s brother-in-law is a pimp, procuring for his own wife. Realizing her husband’s intention to introduce her dumb sister into the fresh trade, the akka requests Sakthi to elope with her younger sister. With the consent his friends, Sakthi fixes a date to leave the place with his lover.

Meanwhile, the local don hires these five friends to kill a prominent contractor, leading to a big twist in the whole story. The murder attempt fails; Pandu is beaten to death on the spot by contractor’s security guards. The special force swoops down on the rest of the teammates who are brutally killed one by one, except for Sakthi. Whether he manages to escape from the police and accomplish his dream of a peaceful life with his lover forms the rest of the film.

One can’t say that Renigunta only has bloody violence; it also has plenty of (black) comedy, romance and sentiments, and all components are convincingly presented just as in Subramaniapuram. Thanks to director Panneerselvam, Renigunta is completely free from any sort of exaggeration, be it in graphics, number of songs, length and “superman effects” of the fight scenes. All credit goes to Panneerselvam’s clean script, the highlight of the film, which gives everything in the right proportion. In short, Renigunta simply rocks!

Don't give perplexed looks if you walk into the theatre not knowing the meaning of Pravarakhyudu. Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam explains the word in detail a little late but it does clear your doubts. Madan has come up with an easy-going, interesting and a good screenplay that revolves around two adults. Jagapati Babu is analytical, practical, cool and a sensible man whereas Priyamani is sensitive, impetuous. An incident separates them while in college and after a few years they work in the same college. Jagapati as Sashi Kumar and Priyamani as Sailaja share wonderful chemistry and both of them as college students and little later as principal and professor make the story very engaging.

Sashi Kumar's character is interesting. He's straight, no love letters and no hesitation when he proposes to Sailaja. He even explains to her that there is nothing such as love and that it is hormones that attract two living things, it is the society that has created certain mores and customs to control the animal instinct and has given it a legal status called marriage to cohabit. Love could arise anytime or there could be no love at all. Sailaja finds the explanation unsettling and cannot imagine a relationship without love and finds the hero's character full of hypocricy.

A simple concept such as this has been shown in a very simple manner and it could be a rewarding experience for college students who are going through the first flush of love/attraction. Jagapati Babu does his bit too vary his looks and his performance is endearing and stands out. He plays the indifference to perfection. Priyamani is growing as an actress with every film and has taken her character's ego, haughtiness and peculiarity to another level by giving the right expressions. Brahmanandam is funny, never take sit too far, just right as a man who carries tales to Priyamani.

However, it's the time for myths to be broken, and Raaptor Media Film's Mathiya Chennai (Central Chennai) is one of these, detailing the travails of an assistant director as he makes his way towards success.

With a group of lyricists like Vaali, Pazhani Bharathi, Muthulingam, Na Muthukumar and Mu Mehta penning the words and maestro Ilayaraja scoring the music, here's a look at what the Tamil album has to offer.

The maestro's voice rises in mournful lament in Ezhaikkintha Ulagam and no matter that you've heard this particular refrain in other albums like Pithamagan, it still manages to make you get involved in the song. The number itself possesses simplistic lyrics -- a diatribe against the misfortunes that attack poverty, and follow a set pattern. The instrumental arrangement in the second segment is rather heart-warming, as also the chorus, even if you're reminded of that other classic, Amma, Enthan Aaruyire.

En Da Dei begins in colloquial fashion, with the players carrying on a conversation about getting somewhere in life, with startling resemblances to Virumandi's Kombula Poova Suthi. Sung by Rahul Nambiyar, Vijay Yesudas and Tippu, this number is all about achieving the impossible, added to by a gaggle of female voices, all clamouring for attention. The lyrics are fashioned in an enthusiastic manner as well: all about dreaming big dreams and catching falling stars when you can. It's not particularly new -- the score fits into mandatory patterns and heard-before effects.

Review:


This is a modern love story about a RJ (Radio Jockey) Vivan Shah (Himesh Reshammiya) who is undergoing a bitter divorce. He meets an RJ Shanaya (Shehnaz Treasurywala), who is the daughter of DIG. Vivan is a successful RJ on a popular radio channel in the city of Mumbai. Vivan has got everything in life except his marriage.


He takes divorce from his wife Pooja (Sonal Sehgal), the reason behind is the lack of compatibility between the two. But in their hearts Vivan and Pooja don’t want to take divorce but the fast pace of life and busy schedules forces them in to imbalance their relation. Instead of suffering more, they choose to go their separate ways.Suddenly one day Shanaya (Shenaz Treasuryvala) enters vivan’s life and brings a smile to his face. Vivan blatantly discusses everything about Shanaya with Pooja. Pooja identifies his love on Shanaya, becomes the catalyst to bring this realisation that his true love is Shanaya.

Movie Review:


Ameer is come back on his new film Yogi. Yogi Tamil movie for base on Life in slums has distorted a set. There are many former students and IT staff living there. We have story the travails of a youth alive in one such Chennai slum in Yogi. Yogi Tamil movie produced by Ameer’s Team Work creation is ready to hit the television this weekend.


Would he be as good in selecting a story to cast himself in, was the big question, given that ‘Paruthiveeran’ ended up as the most cloned film in recent times.


However, he has chosen a role that does not call for a power packed performance. The Chennai thuggie, tough and mean, has been played by everyone from Jiiva to ‘Jayam’ Ravi, the only difference being in the number of baddies each one can tackle.


What is even more disappointing is that ‘Yogi’ reminds you too much of‘Tsotsi’, Gavin Hood’s brilliantly made film on a ruthless killer and his epiphanous meeting with a small baby, in a rob-and-run case which goes horribly wrong..Left holding the baby, Tsotsi takes care of it including changing diapers, finds a foster mother to breast the child and distances himself from his cronies. Gradually, he has a change of heart and decides to return the child.Hood’s handling of the Tsotsi’s harrowing past as an abused child is shown in fine flash back, and the boy’s sorrow, and the film’s climax are images which are unlikely to be forgotten.


Considering that the story and dialogues are by Ameer, the close prattle between the two films is a tad disappointing. Showing the baby Jessie father Lynden Fernando (Asokan) as wanting to kill the baby because she was fathered by someone else in unconvincing. There is very little by way of depth of characterisation, and the director over-stretches episodes by way of tears or extended abuse. Given that it around us all the time, merely portraying the same does not leave you shaken and stirred.However, Yogi is raw in many places, and acting sits easily on his shoulders. he makes very effective use of his eyes, and unlike the original there are plenty of fight scenes here. Madhumitha as the foster mother easily cruises between high hysteria and soft firmness. Devarajan, as the abusive father stands out, but Tamil cinema has been too full of such characters. Wish Ameer had shown a little more care in shaping the story.

Movie Story:


One might argue that even the first part too looked pretty much like a glamour parade. But, there was also the plot of the police being on the trail of this serial womanizer, his eventual arrest and an interesting courtroom battle where the accused becomes the acquitted through continuous denial and careful arguments. This element goes missing here. The law is not after him. The women who have been subject to his treachery do try to get back at him together, but it is too weak and too late in the movie to salvage lost interest. It is a timid sort of a response to a huge fraud that has been committed and is snuffed out pretty nonchalantly by the criminal; does not make for engaging viewing at all.


It is as if the Casanova is walking from room to room through doors that open at a click; the women fall so easily into his trap. He moves from one woman to the next, easily accomplishes his mission and takes away a huge amount of money. It is like different episodes of the Casanova’s exploits being put together. The only connecting subplot comes in the form of Sangeetha’s character that plays a handicapped immigrant Sri Lankan widow. She is facing a tough situation regarding the custody of her only child. She needs money to settle the issue and surprisingly our Casanova comes to her aid, giving her the required amount which of course has been aggregated from his games with many innocent women.


The climax too is on expected lines. He easily evades the efforts of the wronged women to corner him and escapes to some distant place where he is ready to begin his games afresh. The means that another sequel is on the minds of the makers!

De Dana Dan almost marks a decade of the end of the sensitivity and sensibility of director Priyadarshan who switched on to commercially driven comedy capers post the success of Hera Pheri . De Dana Dan also almost marks a decade of the widespread acceptability that the slapstick genre has gained in scarcity of sane comedies.


Going by its casting, do not expect De Dana Dan to be a sequel, tribute or extension of the Hera Pheri series. Forget the threesome chemistry, there is hardly a single frame in the film where the trio of Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty and Paresh Rawal share screen space. Except of course for the trademark Priyadarshan style chaotic climax where again their chemistry is diluted (literally through flooding fuss) as the entire cast joins them for more commotion.


Nitin Bankar (Akshay Kumar) is a driver under debt and Ram Mishra (Sunil Shetty) is a courier boy who hasn’t delivered much in life. Though both have already assigned girlfriends (Katrina, Sameera) for them, the film still takes too long to come to point. Money is the need of the hour and so Priyadarshan does some hera pheri in the story – which means a kidnap. Just this time the duo kidnaps a canine and you wonder if the film is going to the dogs.


As you try to keep a count on the ever-increasing character artists, the entire cast checks-in a five star hotel. Soon the story takes the shape of the 1992 Hollywood flick ‘ Blame it on the Bellboy ’ which was remade in Bollywood just a year ago as ‘ One Two Three ’ (and also starred Sunil Shetty and Sameera Reddy). A comedy of errors ensues with characters doing Bhagam Bhag throughout the hotel.


Call it a ‘wardrobe’ disaster but Akshay Kumar is locked in one for practically an hour of the film’s runtime. With a seemingly lost Sunil Shetty and a screeching loud Paresh Rawal, it’s left up to the character artists to save the ship. But a flood is induced in the climax as the director seeks inspiration from another Hollywood flick ‘ The Towering Inferno ’ (1974) with each character going down the drain.
